Mazenod defeats Heatherton 6-1, HT 2-1
In State League Round 15 action, SE 2 club Heatherton United’s honeymoon period under coach Shannon Kennedy, who took over mid-season, came to an abrupt end with a crushing 6-1 away defeat to Mazenod United on Saturday. Heatherton’s recent good form of four wins in an undefeated run of five games had seen it move steadily up the table into a mid-table position. The run had come on the back of solid defensive displays, however its defence was mercilessly exposed by an energetic Mazenod side. Young Mazenod striker Cooper Legrand capitalised on Heatherton defensive lapses to score twice from volleys close to goal in a dominant first half display by the home team. Only a late first half penalty to Ali Sanad kept the visitors in the game. They were still in the match until Mazenod’s influential forward Vicente Vasquez added a 60th-minute third for this team. Heatherton capitulated after that point, as Mazenod went on to add further goals through Darren Hewitt, Robert D’Angelo and Vasquez.
Sixth-placed Heatherton must now regroup before next Saturday night when it hosts current league leader Eltham Redbacks. Current ladder
